Hong Kong banks turn to student housing as property bright spot

Related People: Jasmine Y. K. Chiu

Real Estate partner Jasmine Chiu recently shared insights with Bloomberg on how Hong Kong banks are increasingly financing hotel and office conversions into student accommodation, driven by strong demand from non-local students with a growing shortage of student beds, government support and attractive rental yields. Lenders are viewing student housing as one of the few bright spots in the property market.

Jasmine highlighted that banks across local, Chinese, Singaporean and international markets have a strong appetite for the sector. She noted that lenders increasingly see student housing not only as a real estate investment but also as an operational business, making them more willing to provide financing for these projects.
