Overview

Kari Chow is an associate in the IP group in JSM's Hong Kong office.

Kari advises clients on complex commercial transactions involving intellectual property, with a particular focus on the distribution and exploitation of creative content and technology enabled services. Her work includes drafting and negotiating IP, confidentiality and data protection provisions in licences, assignments and other commercial agreements, as well as advising on commercial arrangements where intellectual property and data protection are central to the clients’ business models.

Kari brings an operational and risk management perspective from her in‑house experience, advising on data privacy, information governance and regulatory compliance. She regularly assists with cross‑border data transfers, information security, data breach handling and data access requests, as well as issues relating to the responsible use of technology, including artificial intelligence. Her work also includes supporting compliant and timely engagement with regulators and data subjects, and assisting with the development of internal protocols, policies and contractual frameworks addressing data protection, cybersecurity and AI‑related risk in a commercial and operational context.

Experience

  • Advised multinational companies on commercial co‑development and collaboration arrangements relating to digital platforms and technology‑enabled services, addressing IP ownership, licensing, data use and risk allocation.
  • Advised clients on technology procurement projects, including the purchase and implementation of AI enabled and cloud-based solutions, advising on IP rights, licensing structures, data protection and regulatory considerations in vendor and service provider agreements.
  • Advised clients on the distribution and exploitation of films and other creative contents, including clearing and securing the necessary licences and rights for distribution and related merchandising, and advising on the associated commercial arrangements.
  • Advised internal clients on data privacy and regulatory compliance matters, including PRC related cross‑border data transfers, biometric data collection and processing, cybersecurity breach notification, law‑enforcement data access requests, artificial intelligence‑related issues, and personal data protection impact assessments.
  • Drafted and updated policies and protocols of internal clients, including privacy and cookies policies, metadata cleaning protocols, AI governance policies, BYOD protocols, and data retention schedules, to support compliance and operational risk management.
