Employment partner Joe Choy was interviewed by Hong Kong Economic Journal (HKEJ) on the growing legal and compliance concerns of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption in the workplace. He noted that while AI can enhance efficiency in areas such as recruitment, employee management and daily operations, organisations must carefully manage associated risks, including data privacy, copyright infringement and the reliability of AI-generated outputs.
Joe mentioned that AI-powered recruitment tools may inherit bias from training data and could potentially expose employers to discrimination claims if candidates are treated unfavourably based on protected characteristics. He also stressed that companies remain responsible for safeguarding customer and employee data.
When discussing the development of AI in the legal sector, he shared that while it is convenient to access previous legal advice and institutional knowledge, strict governance measures, including clear AI policies, client-specific restrictions and regular staff training, remain essential to ensure compliance and protect confidential information.
